Applications - RPA Roof Problem Areas

ROOF PROBLEM AREAS

Belzona 3111 (Flexible Membrane) used to seal Roof seam JOINTS AND SEAMS
  • Re-bond lifted sections of built-up roofing.
  • Repair heat sealed or bonded joints.
  • Repair and seal holed and pitted sheeting.
Problem: All of the movement of a building is concentrated at the weak points, such as joints and seams. These can occur between either two separate parts of a building or two dissimilar building materials. Therefore when leakage occurs, its origin can generally be traced to these weak points.

Belzona Solution: Belzona 3111 (Flexible Membrane) was specially developed for repair of these weak points and due to the fact that the effectiveness of the system has been proven over many years, it is now very often used as a preventive measure and applied to these weaknesses from new.

Sealing corrugated roofing with Belzona Solutions Other Belzona Know-How applications for joints and seams include:
  • Point and seal roof edges.
  • Seal fasteners and seams in corrugated roofing.
  • Seal overlapping seams in roof panels.
  • Seal seams in ductwork and air conditioning units.
  • Rebuild and seal concrete joints.
  • Create and repair joints between dissimilar substrates.

Sealing glazing bars with Because Belzona 3000 Series products GLAZING BARS AND SKYLIGHTS
  • Seal cracked plastic or glass.
  • Seal over failed glazing bar seals.
Problem: Glazing bars begin to leak when the putty seal between the glazing bar and the glass dries out and shrinks. The problem is made worse due to movement because of natural expansion and contraction. The conventional repair would be to remove all of the dried-out sealant and replace it. However, this will not solve the problem, since it will happen again. Today skylights are often made from thermosetting plastics such as perspex or acrylic. The problem here is that after prolonged exposure to sunlight these plastics tend to become more and more opaque and what is more, very brittle. As a consequence they often crack due to natural movement or even quite minimal impact.

Belzona Solution: Because Belzona 3000 Series products are brush applied, they can easily follow any contour. They will also bond to all conventional substrates and are unaffected long term by exposure to utra-violet light. Aplying these products as a flashing over glazing bars or as a seal over cracks ensures a long-term, leak-free repair. An added advantage, provided that some light reduction can be tolerated, would be to coat over the entire skylight ensuring that if the glass or perspex is broken the pieces are held in place and can not fall onto personnel below.

Repiaring glazing problems with Belzona products Other Belzona Know-How applications for glazing bars and skylights include:
  • Repair and seal damaged wood glazing bars.
  • Re-bond loose glazing sections.

Guttering and standing water solutions from Belzona GUTTERS AND STANDING WATER
  • Seal joints in sectional gutters.
  • Set and seal gutters to surrounding roof structures.
Problem: Guttering and standing water areas differ in only one respect. Gutters are designed to contain water, which runs off the roof surface. Gutters tend to leak at the joints, through bolt holes, or at the junction of the gutter and the downspouts. Standing water areas are not designed to contain water and only do so due to bad roof design, building movement, settlement or as a result of a problem. Large amounts of standing water on a roof add considerable amounts of extra weight for which the roof was not designed. This extra weight then leads to cracking of the roof substrate, particularly around drains fall pipes and gutters.

Belzona Solution: The Belzona 3000 Series Flexible Membranes are specifically designed for easy application to all of these areas regardless of the substrate. In addition, sunken areas can be leveled with bitumen and the whole area then sealed with Belzona, thus preventing further damage. Other Belzona Know-How applications for gutters and standing water include Seal leaking fall pipe joints, sealing porous concrete or masonry gutters, sealing standing water areas adjacent to drains, fall pipes and gutters, sealing seams and leaks in water collection areas, rebuilding damaged concrete gutters, protecting exposed steel reinforcing bars and rebuilding and protecting corroded metal gutters, fall pipes and supports.

Flashing solutions with Belzona 3000 Series Flexible Membrane products FLASHINGS
  • Reseal loose or damaged masonry parapets.
  • Reseal loose or damaged flashings on roof surfaces.
Problem: Anywhere where the roof substrate meets the walls of a building or where the roof is pierced by a chimney or other penetration you will normally find a flashing of some kind. Any non-porous flexible material can be used to form a flashing, however the most common materials used are lead and bituminous felt. In the case of lead, the flashing is usually anchored in place by trapping the upper third between the brickwork and the pointing mastic. This method invariably causes a problem when the wind catches the flashing, since over a period of time the pointing is loosened thus allowing rainwater to penetrate the wall and enter the wall cavity. Felt flashings are usually bonded to the wall and deteriorate over time due to the effects of UV radiation.

Belzona Solution: By replacing traditional flashings with a Belzona 3000 Series Flexible Membrane product all of the above problems can be eliminated since the systems are unaffected by UV radiation and remain flexible over a wide temperature range. Experience has shown that Belzona 3111 (Flexible Membrane) can provide up to 25 years of continuous protection. Other Belzona Know-How application solutions for flashings include, sealing around breather vents, creating flashings around window reveals, resealing flashings around chimneys, sealing bases of roof mounted machinery, sealing around pipe penetrations, sealing below and around exhaust vent pipes and sealing electrical/telephone service entry points.

PARAPET WALLS AND COPINGS
  • Repoint masonry.
  • Seal around penetrations through parapet walls.
  • Repair and seal cracks in masonry walls.
  • Reseat and grout loose coping stones.
  • Seal over coping stone joints.
  • Seal joints in metal copings.
  • Seal porous surfaces.
Problem: The most common problem experienced is water ingress into the wall cavity due in part to cracking of the coping stone caused by thermal movement, frost damage, and to a lesser extent, impact. A further and more common cause for water entry into the cavity of the wall is the ageing and shrinkage of the pointing mastic used to seal the coping joints.

Belzona Solution: Belzona 3000 Series Flexible Membrane products bond well to stone and are therefore often used to seal stone work, thus preventing water absorption, which in turn prevents damage due to the natural freeze-thaw cycle. Since the Belzona 3000 Series products also retain their flexiblilty over a wide temperature range, they are also ideal for use as a coping joint sealing system, particularly since they are unaffected by UV radiation unlike most proprietary mastics. Belzona Know-How application solutions for parapet walls and copings also includes the restoration of damaged decorative stonework, and the molding and duplication of existing stonework.
