I spent much of my youth working at the Metal Shredders in West Carrollton with Dick Wilson. They shred cars so the working environment is tough. Dick’s philosophy was to put these Belzona® products in the toughest situation and if they didn’t work, back it down to the next toughest application. We were always pleasantly surprised when everything worked. I think the only failure we had was on the shaker table and that Belzona® popped right off there. Bad surface prep was cited as the cause and I have to agree since we did almost none.

Dick retired last year and now Luke is in charge. Luke and I are going to look at a worn shaft next week and I’m thinking this might be the time and place to look at this new Belzona® material. If you remember, Metal Shredders is one of those places that doesn’t really believe in surface prep so now Belzona® has a surface tolerant material. I think these two belong together. Here’s some of what Belzona® has to say:

A critical aspect of any coating or repair material is the ability to adhere to the substrate. For the material to become an integral part of the substrate in order to ensure a durable repair, optimal surface preparation is usually required. Common standards for coatings and repair materials require at least a 3.0-mil angular profile and NACE No. 2/SSPC-SP10 surface cleanliness. In addition, it is critical that the substrate is clean, dry and free of any contaminants before application. Unfortunately, meeting all these requirements in the field can be difficult, and sometimes is impossible. To provide clients with an alternative in challenging situations, Belzona® has launched a fast curing surface tolerant paste grade material, Belzona® 1212.

Belzona® 1212 is capable of being applied onto manually prepared wet or oily surfaces. This material is effective at displacing contaminants from the substrate via a strong electronic affinity with the metallic substrate, which allows the epoxy to penetrate the profile and create a strong mechanical bond. With a simple 1:1 mixing ratio, the product will bond to manually prepared surfaces to a minimum SSPC-SP11/ISO 8501-13 St3 even at low ambient temperature and can be used for numerous applications including patch repairs and leak sealing, pit filling, plate bonding, emergency and general equipment repairs. Due to its versatility, Belzona® 1212 is cost and time effective on preparation, application and downtime. Greater adhesion and deeper penetration can be achieved, providing a long lasting solution.

We’ve added a product page to our website for this material and you can find it here .
